Ministere de l'Ecologie et du Developpement Durable, Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development (MEEDDAT)
The department for research and futures studies (SRP) operates within the French ministry for ecology (MEEDDAT). Its purpose is to promote scientific knowledge to support decision-making. The MEDAD/SRP supports research programmes (7.5 million Euro annually) and research organisations (ADEME, IRSN 57.5 miliion Euro). The creation and financing of programmes is usually done in collaboration with other national funding organisations and stakeholders. Research programmes give special attention to achieving long term compatibility between economic development and human and environmental health. Preference is given to a multi-disciplinarian approach aimed at solving complex multi-factorial problems. Funding is allocated through a national call for tenders.
The three priority areas are:
- The long term management of natural resources, with special focus on biodiversity
- Risks and society, with emphasis on the potential seriousness of natural disasters, technological accidents, and/or health and environmental problems caused by chemical and biological pollution
- Socio-economic considerations; i.e. the critical connections between socio-economic development and environmental change, the inclusion of the environment in public policies, and the use of economic regulation tools.
