Instytut Ochrony Srodowiska, The Institute of Environmental Protection (IEP)
The Institute of Environmental Protection was established in 1986 and is a public research and development body acting under the Ministry of Environment. The main task of the Institute is to explore and define scientific and technical issues of environmental protection within the scope of the Ministry of Environment. The development of state policies at national and international level gives the Institute a special place among various research and development units dealing with environmental protection.
The Ministry of Science and Information Society Technology (MSHE) has also mandated the Institute of Environmental Protection, with respect to the part of the national research programme concerning aspects of environmental protection to:
- manage the said part of the national research program on its behalf
- take a vital role in the creation of the new research programme for this part
- be responsible for implementation of this part
The Institute conducts research studies and application works in the following research areas:
- fundaments for environmental policies and strategies,
- integrated environmental monitoring, especially with regard to environmental degradation processes and effects,
- air protection against pollution,
- climate protection,
- noise and vibration abatement,
- landscape and living nature conservation,
- protection and reclamation of biologically activated land surface,
- protection and renewal of water resources,
- protection of the Baltic Sea and its coastline,
- environmental management of waste.
Furthermore, the Institute's scope of activity also includes:
- International and national co-operation in the field of environmental protection,
- Environmental education,
- Granting technical approvals for manufactured products used for waste water and sewage sludge treatment,
- Issuing expertise opinions regarding environmental safety of pesticides before they may be registered in Poland,
- Development of waste management programmes for the industry and regional waste management plans,
- Providing expert opinions and assessments regarding waste management, including emergency situations
- Issuing opinions regarding direct environmental impact of fertilisers,
- Carrying out biological, physical and chemical analyses of organic and organo-mineral fertilisers
- Implementation and dissemination of effects of the Institute's work through Institute's own publications, organisation of national meetings, conferences and seminars,
- On-going preparatory work on the accreditation of Institut's research laboratories
- Operating a library and information exchange activity,
- Conducting of research and application works aimed at assurance of efficient and economically effective fulfilment of requirements of international environmental agreements signed or ratified by Poland.
