BELSPO logoThe PPS Science Policy is a federal administration with the following mission:

  • preparation, execution and evaluation of science policy and its extensions
  • in particular, on Belgian Government instructions, implementation of scientific and technical means in support of Federal Authority competencies
  • Development of a permanent knowledge resource within scientific and technical spheres at the service of the Federal Authority.
  • In addition, the Prime Minister and the Minister for Science policy agreed in January 2002 to charge the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office with the question of the cultural goods of the Jewish Community plundered during the war.

It is also responsible for 10 Research Institutions. The department's interventions cover a very broad area. It manages an annual budget of about 533 million Euro. Today, it has some 2,700 staff, 33% of whom are university graduates (Federal average: 19%) and 55% of whom are contractual staff. There are more or less equal numbers of women and men.

The mission of the Research Programmes Department is mainly the implementation of multi-annual research programmes, actions and networks on Belgian or international levels
The programmes are implemented by calls for proposals. Proposals are funded after a peer review followed by a strategic evaluation by the steering committee of the programme, which is composed of participants from the concerned administrations.

The priorities for the next years related to sustainable development are Transport & mobility, Agro-food, Health, Climate - incl. Antarctic research, Biodiversity - Antarctica & North Sea, Atmospheric processes, Terrestrial & marine ecosystems and Clean technologies.
